Magic in the Moonlight -Sunday Style Challenge
We don’t go to the movies very often anymore because Hollywood doesn’t release a lot these days that appeals to us, but when we do, we like to go on Sunday morning. We have found that very few people go at that time, and so we enjoy a nearly empty theater that feels like a private showing.
One of our favorite film-writers and directors is Woody Allen. While we appreciate that he doesn’t appeal to some, my husband (who is a New Yorker) and I generally find lots of things to enjoy about his films. We find the scripts to be witty and clever and the actors are usually some of the finest. The locations are places that we love, such as New York City, London, Paris, Rome and in today’s movie, the south of France. I should also mention that his films are short, around 90 minutes, which really appeals to us for a variety of reasons.
Today we went to see his latest film, "Magic in the Moonlight.” It features Colin Firth, Emma Stone and Eileen Atkins, so what is not to love. It is a very stylistic film, set in the late 1920’s, with wonderful costumes, and a location in Provence and the Cote D’Azur, which is captured magically by the cinematographer in beautiful golden light. The music, which is an important element of Woody’s style, is a of mix popular songs from that era, with a little Beethoven and Ravel thrown in. While not his best film, it is still quite delightful and I found myself, as always, smiling from beginning to end. Surely there must be considerable health benefits gained from smiling for 90 minutes.
As we walked back to our car after the film, we passed an outdoor market which had this colorful assortment of dresses that looked as though they came right from a film that was set in the 20’s. A photo of this seemed quite suitable for a Sunday Style blip.
