Reef heron Owhiro Bay Wellington

Nationally endangered since 2013 there are estimated to be only a few hundred birds in NZ though they are found elsewhere in Polynesia.

They are wary birds, keeping to rocky shorelines and feeding and flying low down.

Found most commonly in the north of the North Island
