Grandstand view
Long after the winning post on Epsom racecourse there is a pub called The Rubbing House. When horse racing first started on Epsom Downs there was an area set aside near here where the horses and jockeys were rubbed down after the exertions of the race. After a time a building appeared on the site, and by 1801 there was a public house which is still there. The present establishment was built in 1860 and has a pretty wrought iron balcony overlooking the course.
The pub was very busy today and we were glad we had booked. It was another good meal, but for me the joy of the day was seeing the beautiful wide sky with scudding clouds. Our home surroundings are thick with trees and it is a treat to see the sky. (Is it only clouds that scud? I cannot think of anything else that does!)
