Brithnorth
In October 2006 a new statue of Brithnorth, 10th Ealdorman of Essex who died as leader of the Anglo Saxon forces in the Battle of Maldon against the Vikings in 991AD, was erected at Maldon at the end of the promenade looking down the river estuary towards the nearby battle site. It is enjoyed by those on foot but is a notable landmark for boats navigating the River Blackwater into Maldon.
It stands at 9 feet tall on a massive plinth and the base depicts scenes from the battle and of every day life in Saxon Times. Engraved around the base is 'Grant O Lord Thy Grace, August 991'.
The statue is by John Doubleday who is also famous for his London statues of Charlie Chaplin (Leicester Square), Sherlock Holmes (Baker Street) and also the author Dorothy L Sayers which is at Witham, Essex.
To the left of the photograph are boats from Maldon Yacht Club and in the background is the quay and town of Maldon, Essex.
