Shrewley Tunnel
Shrewley is a small hamlet approximately 6 miles from my village with just a pub and a few houses along the main road.
It also lies on top of the Grand Union canal, in 1793 the Warwick and Birmingham Canal Company obtained an Act of Parliament which authorised the construction of a 22.6 mile canal, the plans showed three tunnels, Shrewley, Rowington and Yardley, but as construction progressed, the last two became deep cuttings, this was not an option at Shrewley, as the route passed under the village, hence the fact the village lies on top of the tunnel.
On the photo the main tunnel can be seen but also on the right up a slope is another tunnel, this was for the horses to go through.
The tunnel is 396metres long and takes about 15 minutes to pass through.
Roo scared me as we walked up the slope as a stone got kicked over the edge and he made a dash for it, thankfully my pal yelled at him and he stopped in his tracks!!!
Why the fascination with canals all of a sudden.....
Well I've sold my pad and the chis will be moving all being well to a hamlet about 4 miles out of Warwick near the canal network, finger crossed for Roo and chis it's all very exciting.
