Our Wattle Tree

A couple of years ago we had a landscape plan done for our garden as we wanted to have a long term aim. The architect suggested a pair of standard roses for each side of our path but, after we came across this standard wattle, we decide it fitted in more with our focus on native plants. I am unsure exactly what species of Acacia it is but think it could be Acacia pubescens (Downey Wattle).

It has been surprising the number of people who have walked by and asked what type of shrub it is and where we got it; must be around a dozen.

It seems that the first Wattle Day was celebrated back in 1910 and was on 1st September. So let me leave you with this quote from the Sydney Morning Herald, September 1, 1910

"Emblem of Patriotism and Love

Let the wattle henceforth be a sacred charge to every Australian. Let us foster and protect and cherish it. Let us plant it in all our parks and reserves and pleasure grounds, so that we may make pilgrimages to its groves in blossom time. let us give our schoolchildren wattle plants, and offer annual prizes for the best grown trees, that there may be no Australian who cannot link it with his childish memories....

To the native born Australian the wattle stands for home, country, kindred, sunshine, and love - every instinct that the heart most deeply enshrines."
