The Green Grass of Home

... A bridge with 1,800 years...

1,800 years.. I don't even have notion what 1,800 years are... and my head "hurts" just with the thought.
The life of around 72 generations in a family tree..

Built by the romans in the 3rd century.
This bridge "saw" and served the Romans, The Swabians, The Visigoths, The Lusitans, The Moors from North Africa, All the Dinasty of Portuguese kings, from the Medieval Age to The Republic ... and is serving us... for 1,800 years.

Modern bridges hardly last a a century without needing repairs, refurbishments, upgrades .. or even demolished for becoming obsolete.. and those simple stones are there for 1,800 years.

Served footman, animals, all sort of carts, carriages, and the entire history of modern automobiles... almost the entire history of human transportation.

I went to this place a few times before, spent there sometime, (even had naps under the pines) and never saw the bridge before... it's not visible from the road, even wen one passes over with the car... it's hidden by boulders the size of a small cottage and vegetation.
It was the second time I brought Jim here.. first time it was like 12 years ago. When we were going back to the car I had the curiosity to go around some sort of an Island of boulders and pines and .. what a flash...the bridge is beautiful.

Though a few died here... looking for a refreshment in the hot summer. The bed of the river is not sandy but muddy.. and the mud betrayed a few.

Did a google search when we got home...

The River is somewhat small... only 30 miles long before he joins the much bigger Douro River, but there was 5 bridges like this,,, only 2 remain.. the other 3 were submerged when a big dam was built to retain water for the agriculture and produce electricity..

Jim is looking to the water and thinking.. "Shame i did not bring the speedos.. I would dive from here"
