Trumpeting Ninety
MrQ is off to his old band mate's ninetieth birthday party in Bristol tomorrow. I made Dick a card using a pic taken in the early 1950s of The Alan Kirby Band rehearsing in The Cambridge pub at the junction of the A10 and the North Circular roads. The pub and some of the band members are long gone. :(
Dick, second left on the stage, still plays his trumpet regularly on gigs. Similarly MrQ, second right, his saxes and clarinet. They should have fun jamming tomorrow with all their old friends.
I put a photograph inside the card of Dick cuddling our children on the deck of the Canberra when Alan Kirby's band was booked to play in 1977 and we went along as crew. The Canberra found fame when she was requisitioned as a troop ship during the Falklands war. She was scrapped in 1997. :(
