Alpine flowers and the Enns valley
We had stayed on the campsite in Schladming before, but it is now in the scheme where you get a Schladming card giving free use of 1 cablecar everyday and other free things, so camping was a massive 32 euros for the 2 of us. However, the gondola up Planai is 17 euros each so you effectively get the camping free, if you go up it. It rained the previous evening so we ate at the Neue Post and had a good meal with the excellent local beer. The morning dawned dry, and we packed up and went to get bread from the shops. Everything was shut as it was a national holiday in Austria. The tourist information centre suggested a garage to get food, but we spotted a bakers on the way and managed to get rolls and some cold meat. We had breakfast in a car park and made our lunch. We took the gondola up the hill and wandered around looking at the flowers and the view east along the Enns valley. The town has changed a lot since we were there 30 years ago, but despite its move upmarket, it is still a lovely part of the world. As we wanted some Almdudler (Austrian fizzy drink) we also used our card to go up to some waterfalls and then drove north to spend the night at Hallein, near Salzburg, where it rained.
