Marble and Me
Today a wander up through Crested Butte into the mountains took us on a back road through to a tiny mountain town called Marble. There is a working marble mine there that used to be very big business for the town. Now there are just the ruins of the huge buildings that processed the marble. Huge columns built of marble slabs still stand, as do a few other buildings built of marble.
In it's day, the operation produced the marble for the veteran headstones and also for the columns of the Lincoln Memorial.
Today the marble is owned by an Italian company and is shipped in huge blocks to Italy for processing.
There is of course a shop selling wonderful marble statues and other works. Huge blocks of cast off marble lie alongside the roadway.
A most intriguing place. And driving through the high mountain meadows I was thrilled to see huge spreads of wildflowers still blooming. We weren't too late! I got lots of lovely shots - but the marble one won!
