A Victorious Occasion

This day, 100 years ago, two soldiers Lt Maurice Dease and Pvt Sidney Godley were involved in an action aimed at holding up the German army advancing through Belgium towards northern France. Dease and Godley were involved in holding a railway bridge.

Both men were awarded the Victoria Cross (the first of the 1st World War); Dease's was awarded posthumously but Godley survived.

Although he lived the greater part of his life in London he was born in East Grinstead and today a plaque recalling his name was unveiled in the High Street.

He is related to Annie Sophia Pattenden whose grave I featured. a few weeks ago. Small world. Small town?
