St Gallen

Stiftsbibliothek St Gallen, the Abbey library of the Benedictine monastery of St Gall, named after the Irish monk who settled there in his hermitage in 612. St Gallus was, at one time, the leading centre for learning and culture in the western world. Today, you wrestle through an avalanche of students meandering from one lesson to the next to get through to the library. The site includes a cathedral, a school and the stunning library, all now enclosed in a world heritage site. The library was remarkable!
