Across the Eden Valley

to the Pennines, from Carrock Fell.

A dull and unseasonal day but lovely, as ever, on Carrock. The quiet, and soft green path was a welcome relief from yesterday, as was no wetsuit or body of water to plunge in to! Carrock has an unusual (for the northern fells) rocky igneous gabbro top and is the site of an Iron Age fort - no surprise attacks from here, you could see them coming from miles off.

Came across this most apposite poem by Emily Dickinson ...

poem no. 1732 (from Johnson ed)

My life closed twice before its close -
It remains to see
If Immortality unveil
A third event to me

So huge, so hopeless to conceive
As these that twice befell.
Parting is all we know of heaven,
And all we need of hell.
