Great Scott

New Orleans jazz trumpeter Christian Scott played at the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels last night. (Blipping this a day late.)

This 26-year-old is my favourite living jazz trumpeter. I've been following him keenly for years and have been lucky enough to see him play live twice. Both times, he was standing only a few feet away. His quintet is composed of young men in their twenties, all of them formidably talented musicians. If Miles were alive today, he'd be jamming with these fellows. Nothing beats live music, and nothing beats enjoying it in a small club with first-rate acoustics. After the show, Scott and his band came out to sign autographs and have a few beers and chat with the audience. It was a fantastic evening, although I feel decidedly worse for wear today.
