Suwalki Town Centre

At least I think it's the town centre. There are so many new attractive places in Suwalki that it is difficult to say which one is the official centre these days. Here a smiling D is looking at the fountain. Last year this area wasn't too prepossessing but now there's a cheerful open space with activities for children and several fountains with interesting sequences of spurts. A few years ago Suwalki was nothing much to write home about but recent developments have turned it into a great example of what can be tastefully done.
Suwalki was at one stage a Russian garrison town which is clearly visible from the many imposing czarist cream and red brick buildings which are being cleaned up. It was a regional capital until the Polish voievodships (counties) were reduced and rationalised a few years ago. I just hope that a few of the old wooden houses and buildings remain too.
A curious revelation a few years ago was that in January 1941 the Soviet Union bought Suwalki from Germany for 7.5 mln dollars in gold. Perhaps that's why there's quite a lot left.
