Dennis Hopper

Whizzed up to see this exhibition before I go away. I have heard varied reports. Its certainly an impressive collection - over 400 photos. And he was obviously very talented in the media, what with writing and directing Easy Rider.

I thought some of the pictures were really good. Others less so. There were very few portraits where you could see the eyes and certainly even less with a catchlight. Most were in shadow.

Is that a bad thing? I don't know; except I have learnt that you should try and get light on the face. Perhaps I have got that wrong.

On the other hand there were some momentus events including the civil rights marches in Alabama with Martin Luther King.

Moving round the gallery, do we need to see snaps of a TV screen showing the moon landings?

I reckon that this is a case of less is more and the selection could be radically pruned to leave the excellent core. However we would all choose a different selection. So I dunno.

Who would be a critic, eh?
