Moody sky over a piece of history

This picture of the Solent from the top of Hot Walls in Old Portsmouth, shows the edge of the Square Tower and the Victoria Pier jutting out into the water.

The Victoria Pier was opened by Queen Victoria in 1842 and was used by the steam packets plying to Ryde.

Shipping has always been an important to the city and, if you look closely, just to the left of Spitbank Fort, is a ship carrying Lower Block 02, part of the lower hull of the new HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrier on its way from Portsmouth to Rosyth.

As this part of the Royal Navy's newest ship leaves the city of Portsmouth, so too does the shipbuilding industry. It is the last piece of shipbuilding to take place here.
