"Baby" Giraffes

These Masai giraffes, also known as Kilimanjaro giraffes, are the world's tallest land animals and are native to Kenya and Tanzania.

At birth, giraffe calves stand at least six feet tall and weigh 150 to 200 pounds. When full grown, the Masai giraffe males can be as tall as 19 feet and weigh between 2,000 and 3,000 pounds.

The front male baby giraffe was born June 16, 2014 (almost 6 weeks ago). In fact, he is so new that he's still nameless! He was 6 feet, 2 inches tall and weighed 146 pounds. He was the second offspring of Harriet. His father was Silver, the herd sire.

Behind him, his 7 month old half-sister Kumi was 6 feet, 1 inches and 157 pounds at birth on December 22, 2013. She was the 10th offspring for her mother Bahati; her father was herd sire, Silver.
She is very protective of her younger brother. After I snapped this shot, she decided there were too many humans watching (and taking pictures), then stepped between us and her baby brother while glaring at us as if to say "you'll have to come past me to get any closer"!
