Scottish Heather in the garden

I do love Heather. I love its colour texture and the way it grows. The sunlight today made it glow with a lovely hue. We have a lot in the rockery and it may need to be cut back soon. Is autumn the best time to do this? Any help with this appreciated as it is quite overgrown now
