Ruined Broch at Burland

Seen from our croft at Noness, the ruined broch at Burland (Sandwick) looks across to its well-preserved neighbor on Mousa. Today I left the car at Noness and walked past the cliffs of Big Ramny Geo to Burland, to the ruined broch and the deserted settlement (cleared by the Bruces of Sandlodge in the 1890's - including my Jamieson ancestors). There was no-one around, it was warm and sunny, and pelliks (porpoises) and solans (gannets) were feeding on, presumably, shoals of mackerel in the tidal stream just off the broch.
