Volcanic cliffs at Eshaness

This walk is a must on our trips to Shetland - ever changing in the weathers and seasons and always spectacular. This was taken looking back from Da Grind o' da Navir back to the lighthouse (where we had parked the car). We took in Da Hols o' Scradda, and the nearby loch and pictish broch ruins, and walked over the causeway in the loch to the flower-covered island (spectacular wildflower growth at this time of year, blue with Sheep's bit scabious flowers), on the way back - then went to the red (granite) shingle beach below the Braewick cafe to give the grandchildren their "beach shot". Great views from there of the granite cliffs by Hillswick and the "Drongs" sea-stacks.
The vikings must have known some geology (before Hutton) because:
"Esh" (old norse) = "Ess" (shetland) = "Ashes" (English)
- so Eshaness is, appropriately, the headland of the ashes (or cinders?) and you can see the lava flows in the cliffs.
