View from Astoria Column
A friend and I drove to Astoria today, to pay a visit to some Finnish people there. We also went to the Astoria Column, a landmark on the highest hill above the town. The column is 125 ft tall, with 164 steps leading to the observation deck surrounding the top. (We did the climb!) The Column was dedicated in 1926, its outside is covered in 22 murals commemorating the significant events in the history of this area. The view from the top is awesome. This shot is toward the mouth of the Columbia River. The bridge spanning the river from Astoria to the Washington state side is over 4 miles long. In the distance is the Pacific Ocean.
