Hawken Fire in Reno in July 2007
Was ignited by careless constructors of this mansion. While welding, a spark flew into the dry sage brush and the workers were in no way prepared to put the quickly spreading fire out.
2700 acres of the Humboldt-Toyabe National Wilderness were destroyed , the fire went over the hills in the lower picture into valleys with a lot more trees and caused great damage. The mansions in the area and the vegetation below them were saved, of course, I nearly said. You can see that in the pictures.
Here are some pics of the fire.
With a lot of government money they tried to reforest the hills but everything died again as the following years were very dry.
A long fight started over who was going to pay for the effort of the firefighters, but I never learned the outcome of that.
Photos taken this morning when I took my morning walk in the upper part of Caughlin Ranch Park. You can tell that I am nearly back to normal again, the little rest pains disappeared while walking :-) And that is all because of your so kind well wishes! It was just plain stupid to try to cross a little creek on wobbely stones in the half dark. I deserved it!
