North south divide

The speckled wood as its name suggests is often found in woodland. I switched to my macro lens to try and capture the ones I normally find on the way up to the moors. And then they disappeared.

Luckily, this chap had ventured beyond the trees and was quite high up on the moors, clearly enjoying the scenery.

The north south divide of the speckled woods is in the colouration where they have formed a cline (new word)... a continuum of colour variation where the northern species are dark brown with white spots and the southern, dark brown with orange spots.

I was pleased to see the LBJ of the butterfly world has a pretty green hue on its back.
