Spider Trees

There are a few of these trees dotted along the roads around where we live. I find the way they grow after being cut back a bit scary in the way the main branches form a large stump at the end first and then many smaller, thinner twigs branch off from that forming what look to me like big spiders!

I don't know what type of tree this is. They are much prettier in the spring/summer when the leaves grow.
