Scotland in Brazil
Well, the rain held off and we had a good turnout and a slow but enjoyable round of golf (neither HH nor I played well, but felt that getting round 18 was an achievement in itself). The Quaich was won by the Brazilian widow of a true Scot (in fact, he was the CEO of Teachers whisky here in Brazil), seen here with our Captain, of Scots descent , pouring whisky into the Quaich, held by the 100% Scottish President of the Rio Saint Andrew Society. The club members played for another Quaich, The Aberdeen Cup, donated by the SAS.
Another good turnout for the prize giving and dinner in the evening and a lot of merriment as foreigners and Brazilians alike learned to do Strip the Willow, Flowers of Edinburgh, the Gay Gordons, etc. A wee Brazilian girl danced the Highland Fling and the Sword Dance to perfection, and our piper was another Brazilian – both belong to a group from the town of Petropolis which has embraced Scottish traditions with the utmost enthusiasm. The dancers have won awards in Scotland and the pipe band, based in São Paulo, has also done well in international competitions there. It’s a strange world.
Altogether a very good day.
