Grizzly area.
A great day in the park if a little wet at times. (That's what comes of coming on an American public holiday weekend!) back at Lake Lodge for dinner so making the most of my 24 hours of wifi while Chris does the laundry!
We followed the northern loop of the Grand Loop Road today stopping at the Norris Geyser Basin to view the Porcelain Springs. A mile of boardwalk with lots of bubbly springs and geysers plus that special sulphur smell and sound like hissing steam trains. This is the hottest set of springs in the park. They are in the NW part of the Volcano where the earth' s crust is the thinnest!
Drove north to Mammoth Hot Springs and the sun decided to join us at this juncture to highlight the amazing silica terraces here. We went down to the village where there were Elk on the hotel lawns ( like the South rim of the Grand canyon ) and we had spotted some on the hillsides earlier on the road side (you can tell where there is wildlife as the traffic stops!) It was certainly busy here but we managed to get a sandwich and eat at a picnic table, as soon as the sun went in it felt cold so we headed to Tower Roosevelt and had a coffee looking over the meadows at the bison grazing.
Our next stop was this view which I think is stunning. It is the valley of the Antelope Creek, an area restricted to humans as a preserve of the Grizzly bears. They like to forage on meadows being predominantly vegetarian, but have trees nearby to hide in.
Climbing higher up ( nearly 9,000 ft) we had a view of the Caldera we were re entering as we headed South.
This is quite a scary place, Grizzly bears or no!
Having a cocktail at the moment containing Huckleberries and I'm not sure what else!
Thank you everybody for looking at my back blips and for all your stars. Sorry the Flickr link didn't work! Will comment when I have spare time!
