The Workers
The work of extending the Blenheim Riverside Railway is continuing apace. The small army of volunteers are putting in hundreds of hours to finish the next stage of the project. Back on the 19th of May I photographed men working on the bridge over the Taylor River. All that work has been completed and the bridge has withstood floods in the river over the winter. The railway line is now extending across the river berms and through the trees into the Omaka Airfield. The objective is to complete the laying of the railway right up to the Aviation Heritage Centre. This centre was made famous a few months ago when Prince William and his lovely Duchess of Cambridge made a visit to it.
All going well the railway should all be in place in time for the big air-show, “Classic Fighters,” being held at Omaka next Easter. In due course the project will be completed when a small railway station is built at the Aviation Heritage Centre.
Today I came across two of the workers at the Taylor River. They were busy with theodolite and digger checking the levels and straightness of the recently newly laid line. Russell, the engineer, is standing beside the digger while Mike is comfortably seated while waiting for his next task. This project would never have happened if it was not for the volunteers. Well done you guys!
