Small tortoiseshell

(Aglais urticae)

I let two butterflies out of the house today. The first was desperately looking for an exit and flew out the minute I opened the window. This one, though, emerged when I removed a picture from the wall, so I fear I may have disturbed her early hibernation. I say 'her' as I think it's a female. I can't find any descriptions that distinguish male from female, beyond that the female is larger than the male. But I did find photos of a male and a female, and the latter seemed to have a hairier body. My photo looked more like the photo marked 'female', but only the butterfly itself knows for sure!
