more town life
Today my daughter and I walked downtown to see Harry Potter at the theatre. I had several cool pictures to choose from to share with you, but then I remembered the request to show more of our version of small town America.
This is known as "The Old Courthouse." I am not sure how old it is, but it has been around for a long, long time. Several years ago a "New Courthouse" was built b/c this one was just not big enough. (That thought is a sad commentary in itself.) Although the New Courthouse is no longer new, it is still common to hear it called by this name to differentiate it from the original.
Despite the change of venue for the legal folks this courthouse has not out-grown it's usefullness to the community. It houses a visitors center for the town. It has a small museum of sorts with all types of artifacts from days gone by. The courtroom is located upstairs and is used for large group meetings and was even used for a play performance about a local legend's legal problems that actually took place in this very courthouse. To the left of the courthouse is the old jail which is now transformed and used as an art gallery.
There is a good amount of land surrounding this building. It is used weekly during the summer for Friday night concerts. It is used year-round for several events. Different statues stand on the grounds giving honor to heroes and those who have brought acclaim to the town. It is not only literaly in the center of town, the activities of the town center around it in many ways. I have never really thought this much about it before writing this. "Going down to the square" is just something taken for granted around here.
To give you some perspective: if you look at the July 11th shot you can see the courthouse down the street on the right side. It is the tallest building visible. Directly across the street from the courthouse you will just be able to see the top of the theatre on the left. It is the cream colored roof that is just beyond the dark, brick building. I was actually standing in front of the theatre when I took today's blip.
