Speckled Wood
I found this Speckled Wood butterfly in our garden this afternoon. The only place that it settled for long enough to photograph was on this rose leaf.
Blipfoto is a great learning tool as recently I learnt from WharfedaleBex that there is a difference between Speckled Woods in the North of England and the South. I don't know where the dividing line is. According to the UK Butterflies website individuals in the north are dark brown with white spots, with those in more southerly locations being dark brown with orange spots. This has given rise to a number of subspecies. As ours has cream spots maybe it is a subspecies.
