Not all bad.

The bindweed, however horrible to cope with, does produce an amazingly beautiful white bell-flower which on closer inspection is incredibly detailed.

Have found a new toy on iPhoto: a control called "levels" at the top of the edit suite. No idea how it does it but it does what I want and sort of HDRs any details.

After yesterday's rant about my Canon I've had a word with myself. Namely to stop being such a slacker and learn to work around such very minor restrictions and use them as a creative generator. Limitations are good for creativity. Must do better :)
