Guildford Cathedral
In 1927 the Diocese of Guildford was created out of the Diocese of Winchester. It was not until 34 years later, on 17th May 1961 that the Cathedral was finally consecrated by the Bishop of Guildford.
In 1931 the architectural competition for the design of the cathedral was won by Edward Maufe - later Sir and RA. The original estimate was £250,000 then war intervened and work stopped until 1952 when a fundraising drive began and an enthusiastic public responded by buying bricks for 2s/6d (12.5p) each.
Fundraising was finally completed in 1968, 7 years after the consecration. The final cost was £900,000.
Today I met a friend at the cathedral cafe for lunch, then, after nearly three hours of happy catching-up, spent some quiet time in the cathedral.
Shortly off for a wonderful CranioSacral treatment. I am lucky, the practitioner, who is also a friend, lives just across the road.
Happy Weekend everyone.
