Yucca Plant

I am rather excited to see my Yucca plant, which my Dad gave from his garden many years ago, is in bud!! Dad didn't want it as it has such sharp tips and he kept hurting himself on it; I gave it a home at the top of my sunken garden area where no one could easily get hurt. I wonder why it has suddenly decided to flower after so long?
