Its a tight squeeze!
The ferry between Portaferry and Strangford twists and turns as it traverses the tidal race between the two coastlines. At one point the ferry faces out to sea. On the sea-side of the race is this horizontal tidal turbine standing some 20ft above the water; its been in place for quite a few years now. Earlier in the summer, some daft eejit drove his boat into the mill, sinking his boat and requiring rescue by the RNLI. You gotta wonder how anyone could do such a thing given the lack of anything else about.
Curiously, a few years back, up by the ruined monastic site at Nendrum, a very rare ancient horizontal tidal mill was discovered on the beach of Mahee Island. Dating at least to 1st millenium AD (maybe earlier); good to see we haven't lost the technique.
