A concrete love affair

Napier's Extraordinary Art Deco heart

In 1931 the Hawke's Bay city of Napier was levelled by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake and resulting fire. The city quickly rebuilt in the prevailing architectural style of the time, Art Deco. It was fantastically appropriate for an area so prone to earthquakes thanks to its reinforced concrete robustness and availability of architect graduates fluent in the design language.

We had such a fantastic afternoon on the Napier Art Deco Walk; exploring Napier's finest buildings and learning all about the city's incredible heritage.

It's a place I have wanted to visit for years, and so glad to have finally made it over.
