Abbey Grounds
For years I used to walk through this park on my way to the shops and always delighted to see it with the colourful autumn trees, snowdrops in the winter, baby birds in the spring and people enjoying warm summer days as they were today. (This photo does it no justice, partly because the light was wrong on the church tower)
Monks used to keep carp in this lake during their time at St Mary’s Abbey until it was demolished in 1539 and the outline of the abbey can still be seen. However even older are a few remains of the Roman wall which used to surround Corinium when it was one of the largest Roman cities in Britain. Today tourists come to see one of the best collections of Roman artifacts in Britain at the local museum as well as visiting the magnificent church in the attractive town of Cirencester in the Cotswolds.
