Reverse Surfing

Sometimes I have trouble choosing just one shot, but today, even though I have some cool pictures from the sandcastle competition, I knew I was going to post this one.

We stood and watched these kids from the esplanade. They looked about 12 and full of mischief. The tide was in and there were quite large waves, which were breaking hard against the wall beneath us and rolling back out.

At first, I thought "those guys are going to get smashed if they surf in on those waves".

But they were actually hanging out below us, catching the wave on its backwash, surfing out, and then, as they hit the next one coming in, just leaping into the air.

Best. Fun. Ever.
