Laidlaw Library

Our new library building is coming along well. It's named after Irvine Laidlaw, who studied economics here in the early 1960s and whose extremely generous £9m gift is supporting this new marvel of engineering.

Personally, it's not quite to my taste - I prefer the beautiful old red brick houses, churches and halls on our campus, but it seems that concrete (or at least the concrete look) is the in thing.

But I do admire the desire of people like Lord Laidlaw to pass on their fortune (both financial and karmic) to encourage those coming after them, particularly people from a less advantageous background, and nurture their intelligence and abilities.
