Lonely Tree and Whernside

This morning we walked from the cottage through Gayle and then across the fields to Burtersett. It was quite misty and hazy this morning, but it was a lovely walk (with easy navigation). On the return leg to Hawes we were buzzed by an Apache helicopter and two Chinook helicopters which were presumably out on manouvers in the valley.

As our route took us back through Hawes village centre, and as it was approaching lunchtime we decided to call for a spot of lunch at one of the cafe's. We had a most delicious lasagna, and I had chocolate Tiffin cake for pudding.

In the afternoon, the mist had burnt off and we decided to head back out towards Ribblehead. We went to the Southerscales nature reserve on the slopes of Ingleborough. I had wanted to take a picture of one of the trees growing out of the limestone pavement.

We managed to find some limestone pavement, and a tree (after we had taken a detour to avoid some cows which had decided to congregate in the gateway). Above Whernside we could see some people enjoying the thermals with their para-wings.

So here we have a tree growing from the limestone pavement with Whernside behind.

On the way back to the car we were followed by a flock of sheep which where were being brought down off the hill by two shepherds on quad bikes and two sheep dogs.

On Thursday we are planning to go to a Sheep dog demonstration to see how it's done without quad bikes. I wonder if the sheep already know where to go and what to do as it's one of the final demonstrations of the summer?
