Roman around town

A long a winding bike ride through town brought us to the National Arboretum, where the original sandstone columns of the east entrance of the capitol building stand, holding up the sky. They were replaced with marble columns in 1957, and sent off into storage, before being resurrected / re-erected in 1990. The Arboretum is a hidden gem, with an amazing collection of bonsai trees, one of which dates to 1625.

On the way back, we wound around by the national mall, and watched the tourists.

It was a melty/wilty/sweaty/thirsty day. An ice cream was in order, but it wasn't no 99.
