Cardiff's Sherman Cymru (previously known the Sherman Theatre) was built as a twin-auditorium venue in 1973. Within the premises are two performance spaces: the main auditorium with 468 seats, & the studio / arena which seats between 143 & 163 in the round.
It was announced in June 2009 that the theatre would be undergoing a £5.4m refurbishment, with £3.9m of that being awarded by the Arts Council of Wales. The building closed in 2010 & re-opened in February 2012. The redesign was led by Caerleon-born architect Jonathan Adams (he is best known as designer of the £106m Wales Millennum Centre in Cardiff Bay). The Theatre's façade has a distinctive scale-like metal cladding & the new entrance has been relocated under a dramatic "eye lid".
