LegenDerry
We spent today in Londonderry / Derry. The name of the city is as contentious as it's past. "The Troubles" refers three decades of violence between elements of Northern Ireland's Irish nationalist community (Irish/Catholic) and its unionist community (British/ Protestant). Among everything else, the name of the city is fought about until this very day. Apparently one day an elderly gent called a talk back radio station and and stated he was sick of the arguing and thought it should be called neither. 'What should it be called?' The hosts asked. 'LedgenDerry!' He answered. The news spread fast and now most people of Ireland use the new name as a way of avoiding conflict. Although peace has been restored there are scars and reminders of The Troubles all over the city, including many of these murals.
Troubles aside, Mum and I had an amazing day in old LegenDerry. They were having their annual celebration of the end of the 100 day siege of 1688, so there were marching bands and lots of happy people. We enjoyed some 1.49 pound pints and loved walking around town in the sunshine.
We then headed to Omagh, had an amazing dinner, and skyped with Kez and Annabelle before bed.
