Loch Doon, Scotland
Another view from my office window as we fly over Scotland on our way to Heathrow.
Loch Doon is a freshwater lake in Ayrshire, Scotland, the largest inland loch in southern Scotland. It was dammed in the 1930s, which raised the water level by 27 feet and provided seasonal storage for the Galloway Hydro-electric power scheme. When the loch was dammed, the ruins of Balloch Castle, or Loch Doon Castle, were moved from an island in the loch to the shore to prevent the castle from being engulfed with the rising water!
The loch is becoming a tourist destination after the Scottish Dark Sky Observatory opened a couple of years ago. It is situated in the only Dark Sky Park in the UK and one of only 8 in the world.
I really do think I need to visit some of these sights that I see from the air!
