A Castle Sunset...

As we came upon Eilean Donan castle, the sun was just setting and the clouds let some of the glorious colour through. The castle is situated on an island at the point where three sea lochs meet.

I find it amazing to think that this was first inhabited around the 6th century, then the first fortified castle was built in the mid 13th century and then at least four different versions of the castle have been built and re-built.

I read that it was partially destroyed in a Jacobite uprising in 1719 and lay in ruins for the best part of 200 years until the island was bought in 1911 and 20 years later the castle was restored to its former glory. Now that's a Grand Design...
