Newport Boat Show. GX1, Leitz Summitar 50mm.
We are taking a much-needed break this weekend and drove down to Newport, RI. Our first exploration led us to an enormous boat show taking place in the harbor. Yachts, motor launches, exquisite wooden sailboats, and enormous oligarch-sized mega motor yachts were all represented. The organizers had arranged wooden pontoon walkways between the boats so that one could stroll well out into the harbor and hop on board any boat that one pleased, remembering to remove shoes, of course. Where to start photographing such an event and to condense the feeling of the show into just one Blip?! The sky was heavily overcast and in fact we got drenched later on, but I had long enough to collect some material. After some deliberation I chose this one, since it shows the flags of all the different boat manufacturers in a multitude of colors against the threatening sky. As an after note, I will mention that, for only the second time in nearly 40 years of walking around taking pictures with my old Leicas, a man came up to me because he recognized the Summitar lens hanging off the front of the GX1. It led to a nice conversation. The first time is a great story for another Blip blurb...
