All the fun of the show
This weekend the 94th Blackheath Flower and Craft show was held in the Community Hall. Last year, the show struggled to break even. On the sunday, the Growers Market was also in the park and hardly anyone went in to the show, despite great weather and copious crowds just outside the door.
This year, the market was again on the Sunday and the Society were worried that the same thing would happen. But they pulled out all stops - did more advertising, threw open the doors, put out some scarecrows and balloons, offered free cups of tea and coffee and put on some great cakes.
It is something to treasure. Yes, it's old-fashioned, but it's beautiful, gentle and bursting with community.
The year before last the Society donated $1000 to the Streetscape Group which organised a planting of Rhododendrons within the School along the highway fence. Large trees had come down in the great storm of 2011 and this planting was designed to replace what the children called Grandma's woods. The school children have maintained this planting diligently through periods of shocking drought - what a lovely combined initiative.
