50 Years of UOE
Luke and I are both alumni of The University of Essex (3 years apart) and today went along to the homecoming weekend to join in with the celebrations. We had such a good full day, after collecting our welcome packs and commemorative badges we went along to a lecture on the history of Marks Hall which featured on my blip when we went last month, it was interesting and also talked about other roman and neolithic discoveries that the UOE funded dig has been uncovering.
We then did a tour of Wivenhoe House Hotel which had a long history before becoming the office base of the university then a hotel in the 80s and is now a Hotel School.
There were lots of lecture clashes and we opted to miss one concerning childhood violence and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein in favour of a screening of Mustard, a film by one of our old lecturers John Haynes, about the student unrest in the 60s and 70s, particularly the events of May 1968.
This photo was taken in square 3, we had planned to go to a biology/psychology lecture but opted to sit in the sun with a beer instead!
Saw lots of familiar faces and cringed and smiled at many memories! At the screening I chatted with a lecturer from the history dept, she never taught me but I used to serve her all the time when I worked in the coop!! She remarked that I looked the same except I now straighten my hair!!!!! I don't think I owned straightners at uni, my hair was usually a bit unruly and big!!
In the evening I got together with friends from college for a curry, we had a lovely time but the evening will remain memorable as Luke ordered us meaty rice!!! Thankyou Matt for letting me have your pilau!!
An excellent day!
