A classic view on a stormy day
Today was almost a blipless day as we were making our final transfer from Shanghai to Hong Kong. As we were not flying until after lunch we took a brief walk round near our hotel and popped into the Catholic Cathedral which was nearby. It was rather weird to visit a building that was so quintessentially English in style and then to hear a voice singing one of the familiar hymns. It sounded like a boy soprano so I was quite surprised to discover it was in fact a Chinese woman. I guess her high pitched normal speech makes her sound like a boy especially as there was no vibrato in her singing voice.
Hong Kong has been suffering the tale end of a typhoon today so our flight was rather eventful, setting off quite late and then being buffeted by the wind so badly when we landed that the pilot had to take off again as the the wings were rocking too much after his wheels had touched the ground. We circled round for a second attempt to land with a lot of very worried passengers though I felt strangely calm as I thought the pilot had made the right call to abort the first landing. The descent was a lot smoother second time round though the last hundred metres or so were pretty rough but he managed balance the wings sufficiently well to make a safe landing.
We are staying at the Marco Polo Hotel on the Kowloon Harbour front with the classic view of Hong Kong across the water so I could not resist the opportunity to take a night shot for my blip, especially as I had refrained yesterday from showing you my images of Shanghai skyscrapers yesterday - possibly the most photographed view in all China.
