Who are we?
I had to renew my annual bus pass today (for the last time before concessionary travel cuts in!) which meant parking in the centre of Edinburgh. I chose the back of Waverley Station underneath the Calton jail. As I walked up to the entrance to Waverley I spotted three cartography maps showing the world.
All looked normal until on closer inspection I was thrown by the names associated with the familiar countries. Australia had become Greenland and so on.
This was an art installation as part of the Edinburgh Art Festival. It is Tam Joseph's piece Hand made map of the world, 2014 and is part of the exhibition entitled Where do I end and you begin
There can be several interpretations of the significance of the piece. As the notice alongside the work stated it can range from an expression of imperialism, to interpretation of modern day invasions, to issues of nationhood.
Whatever take you may have I thought it apt as we move to within a few hours of the major historic vote on Scotland's future.
